Vegetable Gardening Advice for the Backyard Gardener

Vegetable gardening is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself and your family. Not only will you have the freshest vegetables for your table, but you will know where they are from and how they were grown. You will be able to pick them at their peak, with the full, luscious flavor you want, and the top level of vitamins and minerals for your good health.

Let me help you get started with a garden you will be proud of. I've been growing gardens since I was a child. Growing up in the Chicago area of the Midwest, I was blessed to have the black fertile soil that grew a abundant vegetables. Now, in the scorching Southwestern desert--Phoenix, Arizona--the soil and climate are completely different in every way.

Both areas have advantages and disadvantages. The Midwest has a shorter growing season, making some vegetables difficult to ripen before frost.

Phoenix has a summer heat and sun intensity that fries everything by the end of June. So here we take a different approach. The clay soil also can be difficult to work with. My tips will help you to succeed, whatever climate you live in.

No Space for a Garden?

For those who don't have the space for a garden, there is also the option of container gardening on a patio or windowsill. Even indoor gardening under lights may be an option.

There is something about gardening that brings a sense of peace to the very soul. A chance to re-connect with nature, the nurturing of a living thing that brings beauty or sustenance to our lives. It brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that few other things can rival.
